DIRECT AWARENESS AND CONTEMPLATION OF DIGITAL ACTIVITY

back to liberating contemplation

This practice involves intentionally being aware of all digital activity and contemplating the nature of that activity. When you are typing, you are directly aware of typing. When you are scrolling, you are directly aware of scrolling. Reading, you are directly aware of reading; watching, you are directly of watching; reacting emotionally, reacting intellectually, distracting, concentrating--whatever the digital activity, and however you are doing it, you are directly aware of it.

As you are directly aware of your experience, guide your awareness by these questions: Is this permanent or impermanent? Is this me or not me (self or not-self)? Is this ultimately satisfying or dissatisfying (does it reach a stable, satisfactory end)?

Whenever possible, observe the nature of digital experience in the context of these questions. If doing so is a functional distraction to the task at hand, just be aware of the present digital activity directly.
